Fly agaric - amanita muscaria - is a mushroom that probably everyone knows. It is one of the most characteristic and recognizable mushrooms in the world, thanks to its red cap with white spots. These spots are remnants of the complete cover that surrounded the fungus in the juvenile stage. The cap of the fly agaric has a diameter of 5 to 20 cm and is slightly concave in the middle. The gills under the cap are white and dense. The stem of the fly agaric is white or yellowish, cylindrical and solid or hollow inside. It is 10 to 25 cm high and 1 to 3 cm thick. At the base of the stem there is a tuber and on the stem a ring, which is also the remnant of the total cover. The flesh of the red toadstool is white, brittle and odorless. Does not change color after damage.

Fly agaric grows in deciduous and coniferous forests, on acidic soils rich in humus. It prefers moist and shaded places. It occurs throughout the northern hemisphere, from Europe to Asia and North America. It is a mycorrhizal fungus, i.e. it lives in symbiosis with tree roots, especially birches, pines and spruces. The fruiting bodies of the fly agaric appear from July to November.

Fly agaric is a poisonous and hallucinogenic mushroom. It contains many psychoactive substances such as muscarine, ibotenic acid and muscimol. These substances affect the nervous system, causing various symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sweating, salivation, visual disturbances, drowsiness, agitation, hallucinations, confusion, anxiety, euphoria, aggression or depression. The effect of fly agaric is very diverse and depends on the dose, individual sensitivity and the method of preparing the mushroom. Some of these substances are thermolabile, i.e. they decompose under the influence of high temperatures. Therefore, some people cook or dry fly agaric to reduce its toxicity and increase its hallucinogenic effects. However, this practice is very dangerous and can lead to serious poisoning or even death.

The fly agaric also has its own history and culture. It has long been used as an intoxicant and entheogen by some peoples of Siberia, who considered it a sacred mushroom and a way to communicate with spirits. The fly agaric has also been an inspiration for many artists, writers and pop culture creators. For example, the fly agaric appears in fairy tales and fables such as Alice in Wonderland, where this mushroom changes the size of the heroine. The fly agaric is also a symbol of the Smurfs' houses and the mushroom that enlarges the character Mario in video games. The fly agaric is a mushroom with many faces that arouses interest, fascination and warning.
